PERFORMANCE NOTES

This mallet arrangement of the second movement of Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 is an adaptation of an arrangement performed for the mixed interdisciplinary ensemble, Dark by Five (violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, piano, and percussion). Although the marimba 3 part extends below A2 in some select spots, those notes are optional and a second five-octave marimba is not necessary. All staccatos should be interpreted as dead strokes throughout the piece. The snare drum and cymbal parts are optional and should be performed by two players. Marimba 1 and Marimba 4 can share a single marimba.
